Malatya is one of the oldest cities in Anatolia with thousands of years of history. It has been home to many civilizations such as the Hittites, Assyrians, Persians, Romans, and Byzantines.
The city's name comes from the word 'Melid' or 'Milid' in the Hittite language, meaning 'honey city'. This name reflects the historical importance and richness of the region.
Malatya, an important trade center during the Ottoman period, continued to develop during the Republican era. After the old city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1838, the city was moved to its current location.
Today, Malatya has managed to be a modern city while preserving its historical heritage.
