Bervanik Printing

Bervanik is an apron or loincloth-type piece used in traditional Malatya women's clothing. It is prepared by printing patterns with wooden molds on plain woven cloth.

It was produced by Hıdır Oral in Malatya city center and ended with the master's death in 1996. Oral's fabric prints were awarded by the Traditional Handicrafts Research Foundation (GESAV).

Wooden molds are used in bervanik printing. The melted beeswax and paraffin mixture is pressed onto the fabric with prepared wooden molds and dipped in indigo dye bath. It is stated that the famous pear wood of Akçadağ is preferred for mold making.

Motif names carved on the molds include Rooster, Branch, Flower, Sultan Willow, Side Cut, Star, Star and Crescent of Samsat. These motifs contain stylized life elements and regional depictions.

Bervanik is a work apron used by women in daily life, mostly in villages. This traditional handicraft is one of the cultural values used in Malatya in the past but not produced today.
